How Do You Get Autism?

How Do You Get Autism?

Autism can seem like a mysterious disease that can affect any family.  It causes one to question, “How do you get autism?” as well as make parents wonder if they did something wrong to cause their child to be autistic.  However, just as there is not one type of autism, there is also not one specific cause of autism.

There are a number of different factors that could be the cause for autism.  Most of these causes fall under one of two categories: genes and environmental factors.  Usually, autism is not caused by just one factor but by a combination of different factors.  Some of these factors include the parents’ age during conception, difficulties during pregnancy or delivering, illness or medication from the mother during pregnancy, or the baby not receiving enough oxygen to the brain while the womb.

Vaccinations, Toxins, and Chemicals an Answer to “How Do You Get Autism?”

There has been much argument over vaccines and their role in autism.  Many doctors and professionals claim that there is no link between the vaccines, while others believe that a certain vaccine could have activated pre-existing autism genes.  While there is no set answer for whether vaccinations are to blame for autism, all parents are encouraged to research and make this decision for themselves. An option for new parents is to delay vaccines or spread them out over a longer period of time.

As far as environmental factors are concerned, many believe that the toxins and chemicals in everyday products are to blame for causing children to be born with autism.  Again, there is no hard proof that these products are to blame.  However, there have been many testimonials from parents with children with autism who say that their child’s autism is easier to handle when they rid their house of cleaners and strong products.

Are Diets an Answer to “How Do You Get Autism?”

Another environmental factor to consider is the diet your child consumes.  Many processed foods and artificial colors and flavors and food can aggravate autism in children.  While switching to a more natural diet is not a full cure for autism, many individuals with autism do astonishingly better.

Prevent-Autism.org suggests a diet rich in organic and natural food.  They warn against feeding children meat that has been treated with hormones or antibiotics.  Furthermore, individuals with autism perform better when the gluten products and casein from dairy products are removed from their diets.

Preventing Autism in Future Pregnancies

For those parents who looking to get pregnant again, there are ways to decrease the chance of autism in your child before you ever conceive.  Stay away from strong medications, such as anti-depressants; mothers taking anti-depressants, such as Zoloft, have increased their chances for having a child with autism.  Also, taking prenatal vitamins diligently in your first trimester decreases the odds of your child developing autism.

It is suggested that expectant moms hold off on vaccinations while pregnant, even flu vaccines.  Instead, it is important for moms-to-be to stay healthy with nutrient-rich foods, Vitamin C, and a stress-free environment.  Once the baby is born, it is beneficial to nurse as long as possible.

There may never be a set answer to the question, “How do you get autism?,” but researching possible causes and treatments can make you a better-informed parent.  Even though you cannot change your child’s diagnosis, you can still change his and your family’s quality of life.
