An Early-Years Group Program for Developing Social Understanding and Social Competence for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Related Challenges

Based on a pirate theme, this social understanding program is for preschool-to third-grade children who have social cognitive challenges, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The program is designed to help these children learn constructive social interaction skills in the area of friendship making, social problem solving, and emotional expression. The program is divided into four levels: preschool/kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3, and is to be facilitated during school time by a teacher, counselor, therapist, or paraprofessional (the captain) with either the full class or a small group (the pirates). A newsletter titled "Ship-to-Shore" outlining each adventure is provided for home to ensure that children have an opportunity to transfer their learning across home and school contexts.Pirates is an exceptional social skills training program for an age group of children for whom there are few resources. Problems of socialization are the hallmark of autism spectrum disorders. This program effectively utilizes a wide range of modlities (such as games, music, dress-up, arts and crafts, and relaxation) to address and reinforce significant social skills and social cognitions through a unique approach.--Robert E Accordino, MSc, University of Oxford352 pages. 2007
