Special Needs App of the Day: Simplex Spelling Phonics 2

Special Needs App of the Day: Simplex Spelling Phonics 2

For those of you who loved Simplex Spelling Phonics 1, get ready for the next level up.  Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 covers the most frequently used words in the English language, but excludes those already covered in Phonics 1.

The goal of Simplex Spelling is to teach spelling and reading skills by focusing on syllables and phonological awareness.  By breaking down words into its simplest parts, children really learn how words are put together, and they can better understand spelling and the pronunciation that goes along with it.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is bigger and better, with over 650 high frequency words in 54 lessons.  Simplex Spelling uses their own “reverse phonics” approach, in which words are broken down into syllables both auditorily and visually.  When a word pops up on the screen, each syllable is spoken clearly as the syllable drops down, which provides the visual feedback.  This approach allows students to spell words by sounding them out.  Additionally, you can touch the “hint” button to break down each syllable into phonemes, or each individual sound that makes up that syllable.

Each word includes a box for each letter that makes up that word.  The app will speak the sound, and the student chooses which letter makes that sound.  Once you finish each letter, you have spelled a word, and the app speaks the word while highlighting the syllables.  As with Phonics 1, this app shows a red background if the chosen letter is not in the word, a blue background if the letter is in the word but in the wrong space, and a green background for the correct letter.  This visual representation helps aid learning and promotes success for every word.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 includes over two years of spelling curriculum in one app.  One great advantage of Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is that it includes a three-letter minimum for each word and introduces compound words; this feature follows the trend of key words in the English language that all have at least three letters.  It also focuses more on syllables, such as the schwa sound, accented and unaccented syllables, open and closed syllables, as well as explaining consonant doubling and the silent “e.”

The app includes settings for American, British, and Canadian English spelling.  Phonics 2 also allows teachers and parents to choose how many times a word is spelled correctly before it is called “mastered,” and students can see a list of words they have missed.  Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 allows for 40 user accounts, which is ideal for educational settings.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is an intensive app, and parents, educators, and students get a great deal.  The app covers hundreds of high frequency words, and the app improves literacy, spelling, and phonemic awareness, all of which are necessary skills.  Through an engaging game atmosphere, children will love testing and improving these skills.  Simplex Spelling follows a progression and allows for mastering of spelling skills, so it can meet children on their individual levels and needs.
