Book Review: Let's Hear It For Almigal

Let’s Hear It For Almigal is the story of a confident little girl -- she feels like the luckiest girl in the world most of the time, except when she can’t hear everything she wants to hear.

Almigal introduces her friends; “each one is different,” and both she and her best friend wear hearing aids.  However, Almigal does feel left out when she can’t hear what her friends are saying -- she even says, “I need to hear every single sound in the whole entire universe!”

Almigal visits her doctor, who recommends cochlear implants (or “coke-lee-ur,” as Almigal says).  After getting her cochlear implants, Almigal tries them on with her favorite outfits, reads out loud with her mother, and even has some mishaps with jumping into the pool and letting her dog try on the implants.  But what’s most important?  Almigal can finally hear her parents say, “I love you.”

Let’s Hear It For Almigal was written by Wendy Kupfer, whose daughter was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at 10 months of age.  About 12,000 babies are born with hearing loss in the United States each year, and Kupfer wanted a story for these children; she was frustrated by the lack of characters wearing hearing aids or implants in children’s stories, and she felt children with hearing loss needed to see other children like them in the media.  The book also helps educate children about hearing loss and acts as a starting point for classroom conversations about children with disabilities.

Let’s Hear It For Almigal is fun and spunky, and Tammie Lyon’s illustrations bring extra life into Almigal’s positive and energetic character.  The book is lighthearted and endearing.
