The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec – Combo Pack

From the popular graphic novel series which has captured the attention of readers in Europe, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec is now available in a Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy Combo Pack. The story is a concoction of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark with a French twist. That should give you an idea of what this movie is like. Louise Bourgoin stars as Adèle Blanc-Sec, an adventurist/writer who manages to get herself into some strange and often dangerous circumstances.

This story takes place in the early 20th century, which was a time when women were not doing the kinds of things Adele was doing. She is an empowered woman and a dedicated sister. By the way, her sister is between life and death and Adele is obsessed with hunting down a mummified Egyptian Pharaoh’s doctor to help her sister live. Along the way she must deal with the police, a prospective suitor, and of course, monsters. Yes, monsters. And let’s not forget the dinosaur.

Her friend, Professor Esperandieu, has used his power on a pterodactyl egg in the museum and now there is a live baby pterodactyl flying around 1911 Paris! It is her hope that Esperandieu will use his power to bring this Egyptian doctor back to life so he can save her sister’s life. By the way, here sister has a hatpin sticking through her head. If Adèle cannot get the mummy back to life, her sister will not survive. So, getting the mummy to Paris from an Egyptian tomb is her first priority.

If this all sounds hokey, it is, but it is beautifully filmed and is interesting and entertaining. The movie was a big hit in Europe and is designed for family viewing. The MPAA has rated it “PG” for some violence, language, brief sensuality and rude humor. The one thing that I feel parents should keep in mind when deciding on this film for their children is the fact that there is violence and the hatpin sticking through an almost-dead woman’s head might be upsetting for some viewers. Other than that, it is an extraordinary adventure.
