Special Needs App of the Day: Trash Chaos

Sustainability and taking care of the planet is a hot topic, and what really needs to happen is educating young children about recycling versus waste. Trash Chaos is a free app that engages children in a game while also using teachable moments to promote recycling.

In the game, the Evil Queen Ignorantia (supervising parents will find this clever) has sent her sidekicks, the Ignarus, to contaminate the planet. It’s up to you, as a member of the Yogome Squad to separate all the trash that you can.

Play in the forest, the arctic, the ocean, or in space. Each level includes organic waste (food) and plastic recyclables, and you simply need to drag the objects into the appropriate bin. Be careful of the trash wave, during which you’ll have to work quickly to clear the objects. This action is great for education as well as some fine motor practice. The fast-paced action is thrilling and engaging for children of many ages and abilities.

The game is motivating because you earn coins and badges for each level, and there are 24 fun-filled levels to complete. You can also input your child’s age and grade, so the game adapts to your child’s ability. Each level also includes a few screens of information and fun facts about recycling.

Find Trash Chaos for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch in the App Store.
