You already have a standard walker at home that cost less than a pair of sneakers. The question sitting in the car with you on the way home is: why? That question has a real answer, and it starts with understanding what the two devices do differently. What a Gait Trainer Does. A standard walker gives your child something to hold and lean on. That's genuinely useful for a child who has the balance and trunk control to upright themselves, the hip stability to shift weight from foot to foot, and the coordination to advance the walker in a controlled rhythm. In a study by Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) Department of Health and Human Performance, a treadmill at the bottom of a tank filled with 270 gallons of water has been helping paraplegics make great strides. This same technique has also been applied to children with cerebral palsy (CP) to improve their endurance and leg strength. In a previous study which ran from 2005-2008 at MTSU, children with cerebral palsy trained in the underwater treadmill and showed better leg efficiency and strength after only three sessions a week for eight weeks. They were also able to walk faster on dry land. Sandra Stevens, a PhD graduate who is now an independent researcher at the university, has been studying the effects of the underwater treadmill since 2005. Her doctoral dissertation at MTSU observed 12 adults with incomplete spinal cord injuries who trained in the same way as the children with CP. These participants had some motor or sensory functions preserved below the level of the injury. Those who completed the study in 2010 had significantly improved motor function. Some showed increased stability during transfers and others even lost the need for a device to assist with walking. They also reported an improved sense of well-being and self-confidence, due to a renewed hope in gaining mobility. No one was more surprised than Randy Burklund, owner of Kinderlift, that a ski vest designed to keep kids safe on the slopes would find a market in the special needs community. Kinderlift was created by a mother whose son fell off a ski lift when he was very young. The boy was fine, but the mother had the idea of making a brightly colored vest with a strap on the back so that it is easy for parents to grab onto kids when they start to fall as they learn to ski. “The strap is something a person could hold onto on the ride up the ski lift, too, to make sure the kid doesn’t go anywhere,” Burklund says. Kinderlift began in the mid-nineties. Over the years, the ski vest was sold in some major ski areas, like Beaver Creek, Park City, and Northstar Lake Tahoe. Sometime within the last ten years, a school in Lewiston, Maine, heard about Kinderlift safety vests. “They found out about them because somebody who was skiing had one or was using one. Word got over to them. [Farwell School] bought a couple to try to use with their special needs kids … to get around and help with mobility issues,” Burklund says.
