On February 20, the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine confirmed that the Ukrainian team would not march in the opening ceremony at Verona's Arena di Verona on March 6. The announcement came with a specific instruction: the Ukrainian flag should not be displayed at the opening ceremony. President Zelensky, speaking publicly about the IPC's original decision, called it "dirty." Ukrainian NPC President Valerii Sushkevych was direct about the line he was drawing: the boycott applies to the ceremony, not the competition. "Such a step would play into the hands of Russian leader Vladimir Putin," he said, explaining why Ukrainian athletes will still race. Six sports. Seventy-nine gold medals. Ten days across the Italian Dolomites, Milan, and Verona. The 2026 Winter Paralympics run March 6 through March 15. Whether you're planning to watch every session on Peacock or just trying to explain to your family what Paralympic sport actually looks like, here's a clear, event-by-event breakdown of everything on the program. Para Alpine Skiing. Para alpine skiing athletes race down steep mountain slopes at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour (over 60 miles per hour), in some of the same events you'd find at the Winter Olympics. The sport has been part of every Winter Paralympics since the very first one in 1976. Five events are on the program: downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, and combined. Athletes compete in three categories based on their disability:   Standing athletes have physical impairments and ski upright.  Seated athletes use a monoski, a seat mounted on a single ski that allows full-speed alpine technique from a sitting position.  Visually impaired athletes ski with a sighted guide who communicates directions via radio in real time. Four days from now, in a small town in southern England, the 2026 Paralympic Games will officially begin. Not with athletes. Not with a stadium. With a flame. On February 24, the Paralympic Flame will be lit at Stoke Mandeville in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. This is where a British neurologist named Ludwig Guttmann organized the first Stoke Mandeville Games in 1948, using sport as rehabilitation for British soldiers with spinal cord injuries. What started as a small hospital competition became the foundation for the modern Paralympic movement. The IPC has kept this lighting ceremony unchanged as the Games have grown into a global event. Who Lights the Flame. Two athletes will light the flame at Stoke Mandeville.  Millie Knight is a British para alpine skier who has competed at three Paralympic Games and earned four medals. She is one of the most decorated British Winter Paralympians currently competing.  Andrea Macrì is the captain of the Italian Para Ice Hockey national team. He represents the host country at the ceremony, a nod to the Games that await in Milan and Cortina. The Route. Every few years, when the Paralympics come around, one question floods the internet: wait, isn't this the Special Olympics? They're not the same thing. They've never been the same thing. But the confusion is genuine, and it's worth clearing up before the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games open in Milan on March 6. Two Organizations. Two Missions. They're built from different foundations: different founding stories, different athletes, different eligibility requirements, and different ideas about what competition is for.  Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Its mission is to provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, including conditions like Down syndrome, autism, and other cognitive or developmental disabilities. Special Olympics is participation-focused: athletes train, compete, and celebrate. The emphasis is on inclusion, belonging, and the joy of sport. During the Special Olympic World Winter Games, host towns provide accomodations for the various athletes from around the world and transportation to the various event venues.  Photo Credits: Freddie B. Photography™    The first day of the sports competition for the Special Olympic World Winter Games Austria 2017, the divisioning of the the teams from around the world. Divisioning is a unique system used by Special Olympics to give athletes of all ablities the chance for exciting competition and usually occurs before the start of the World Games competitions. What happens is that divisioning races, judge events, or short team matches are held to assess the athletes’ or teams’ ability levels in competition by team ratings or skill level. The athletes or teams are grouped into the divisions according to three criteria: gender, age and ability level., and there are a minimum of three and a maximum of eight athletes or teams in a division. The divisioning took place at all three different Special Olympic World Winter Games venues: Schladming, Ramsau, and Graz with the winter sports ranging from Cross Country & Alpine skiing to Figure & Speed Skating to Floor Hockey & Floorball, to Snowboarding and Snow Shoeing.             As much as I wish I could be at all venues to capture the exciting pre-competition events of every sport, I reluctanly but necessarily had to chose one; the venues were several hours apart, and that was the floor hockey events at the convention center in the city of Graz.
