Most people I work with have never heard of vocational rehabilitation when we first meet. They've been navigating employment challenges for years: managing their disability, figuring out school, dealing with employers who don't quite get it. No one ever mentioned that there's a federally funded program specifically designed to help them get to work and stay there. Vocational rehabilitation, or VR, is one of the few government programs that combines real financial resources with individualized support. Tuition for a degree or certificate program. Assistive technology. Job coaching. Career counseling from someone who knows disability employment law. Who Qualifies for VR Services. One of the most common things I hear before someone applies is that they didn't think they would qualify. The eligibility threshold is more accessible than most people expect. It comes down to two criteria: you must have a physical or mental disability, and that disability must pose a barrier to getting, keeping, or advancing in employment. Both must be true. The disability category is broad.
