None of that tells you whether a specific staff member will know what to do when your child needs a break from noise, or whether the camp has ever served a kid with a feeding tube, a wheelchair, or a meltdown that lasts twenty minutes. The word "adaptive" on a brochure is a marketing claim, not a specification. Getting past it takes a short list of specific questions, asked directly, before a deposit changes hands. Ask What "Trained Staff" Means in Practice. "Our staff is trained to work with all abilities" can mean a four-hour orientation the week before camp starts, or it can mean counselors with actual experience: a background in special education, a certification in behavioral support, or years of returning summers with the same population. Ask directly: how many hours of disability-specific training do counselors receive, and is it done by an outside specialist or an in-house staff member reading from a handbook? Ask what the counselor-to-camper ratio is for kids who need one-on-one support, and whether that ratio is guaranteed in the contract or dependent on staffing that week. What to Look for in an Adaptive Summer Camp for Your Child

The spring IEP review has a way of feeling like paperwork. The teacher is already thinking about clearing out the classroom. The case manager has four more meetings before Friday. Everyone in the room wants to say the year went fine and move on to summer. That instinct is understandable, and it is also the reason so many families walk out of this specific meeting having missed the one window where they had the whole team in a room together for ten weeks. Once summer starts, the general education teacher who saw your child every day is gone until fall. The related service providers scatter to different assignments. The person who could tell you, in detail, how your child was doing in March is no longer easy to reach. The spring review is the last chance to get real answers while the people who know them are still in the building. Ask for Data, Not a Summary. "Making good progress" is not an answer. Ask the case manager to pull the actual progress-monitoring data for every goal on the current IEP, not a paraphrase of it. This is the 2e student experience: twice exceptional, both gifted and disabled, and caught between two systems that refuse to see the whole child. What Twice Exceptionality Means. Twice exceptional students have documented giftedness in one or more areas alongside a documented disability. That disability might be a learning disability like dyslexia or dyscalculia, ADHD, autism, a physical disability, or a processing disorder. The combination isn't rare. Estimates suggest 14-17% of students in gifted programs also meet criteria for special education services, but far fewer receive both. The problem is institutional. The evaluation process can feel like entering a system designed by people who speak a different language. Assessment types with acronyms you've never heard of. Timelines that vary by district. Results that look like spreadsheets full of numbers. And underneath all of it, the weight of a question no chart really answers: What does this mean for my kid? This is what the process looks like from the inside: the assessments used, how long each stage takes, how to read the results, and what options you have when you disagree. Due to their unpredictable nature, transitions in general, can be very difficult for our children with special needs. The new school year creates a whole host of transitions that made me want to devote this month's column to tips for helping your child make a smooth entrance into school. * About 3-5 day prior to the beginning of the new school year, make a social story with your child that will create a visual map as to what he/she can expect in the upcoming days. The story does not have to be long and should include the basic morning routine (getting dressed, taking the bus, etc.), what the child can expect during the course of the school day (class activities, snack/lunch breaks, recess) and then the schedule for the afternoon/evening (bus ride back, additional therapies, dinner, etc). You may want to laminate the covers so that you can reuse and don't forget to add a place for your child to check off the activity once the event has occurred. Additionally, I encourage you to write your own specific narrations to the story, for example, letting the child know that the noise and activity levels during certain parts of the day are different and what he/she can do about it to reduce their own stress levels.  *If possible, allow your child an opportunity to visit his/her new classroom, 1-2 days ahead of the opening of school.
