What is Early Intervention? Early intervention means giving support to children with special needs as early as possible. This could start when a child is a baby or toddler. It involves special services to help children from birth to age 3. The goal is to help infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities. Services are designed to identify and meet children's needs in five key areas: physical skills, thinking skills, communication skills, social/emotional skills, and self-help skills. Some examples of early intervention services include speech therapy, physical therapy, and developmental therapy. Therapists work with the child and show parents how to help the child at home. I never thought I would be a homeschooling parent. My husband and I bought a house in a neighborhood that gave us access to the area’s best public elementary school. When my twin boys were babies, I would cruise by the school, fantasizing about dropping and picking up my kids. It was before the word “autism” became part of our vocabulary.  Homeschooling, for the parents of an autistic child, is often more of a last resort than a choice. My children were bused to schools far away from that perfect neighborhood school I coveted. We had to accept school district placements in order to get services. We were disconnected from our community in a way that made the autism feel like only a small part of our social problems. After years of chasing autism programs, I still found myself reteaching lessons and begging teachers to follow behavior plans. Homeschooling sounded like a way out of the madness that is special education. At least then I wouldn’t have to attend multiple IEP meetings every year, hire lawyers, secretly threaten bullies, buy gift cards for teachers and still have my son sent home for having meltdowns.  Great Expectations of Special Education Professionals  Call me naïve or whatever you will, but I am the kind of person who likes to believe people will do the right thing — especially people who work in the special education field. But being a special needs parent and dealing with the New York Board of Education has jaded me a bit. Just like some doctors lack bedside manner, some special education professionals become desensitized. Children become numbers in a broken system. Services equal dollar signs and budget cuts are always looming. It’s all too easy to believe we’re on opposite sides of the fence.  I am familiar with the law. I know children are entitled to FAPE. But what the Board of Education is supposed to do and what they actually do are two different things. I wish I could say that I haven’t been lied to, disappointed in or discouraged by special education professionals. But I have. And so when I thought of writing this article, for a few fleeting moments, I wondered: am I expecting too much?
