When Anita was a child she was not given the opportunity to play sports. She grew up with 3 brothers and was the only girl on her block. She substituted sports with music, finding a place in the choir, which gave her the "team" experience, but was definitely not sports. As I Interviewed Anita, her story hit close to home as I also grew up in a prominently boys' world.  Unlike most girls who accepted a world of non-sporting activities, Anita would not settle for 'NO'! Still she could not understand why boys had access to sports and girls did not. Finally she began college, where she was not the only female hungry to play sports, and went on to make the basketball team.  I asked Anita how she discovered her love for rowing. She told me that during her sophomore year in college she was walking across campus and her attention was captured by something hanging in a sling. She inquired about it and was told about rowing, and how she'd be perfect for it!. She laughs and tells me, "Now there's a line!". Anita thought she may not be perfect for rowing but it was perfect for her. She loved that it was outdoors, required teamwork, did harm to no one, and you even put the water back wear you got it, with each stroke. She went on to captain the American rowing team at the 1976 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze medal in women's eight....

As the parent of a daughter with autism, I know about the overwhelming day-to-day effort that comes with raising a child with particular necessities. Many areas need to be checked on a daily basis — calendar, paperwork, toys, and so forth. Below are some tips to help reduce stress.   Keeping a calendar is vital for the special needs child because of important doctor's appointments and IEP meetings you do not want to miss. It does not matter if it is an electronic calendar or paper calendar, just choose your method and stick with it! If you are a tech wiz, then an electronic calendar might work best for you. Electronic calendars on smart phones give you the ability to add lots of information to each appointment.   If you want to have your spouse add the appointment to their electronic calendar, you can send an invite via email. When the appointment is opened and accepted, it will be added to their calendar. This procedure works very well for me and my husband when we are apart and want to schedule something without a conflict arising. The best part of an electronic calendar is the reminder option. While autism has been a "buzz" word for the past few years, efforts for autism awareness have helped families of children with autism receive the proper care and services.  How Can You Light it Up Blue?  In support of Autism Speaks' "Light it Up Blue" campaign, people across the globe are wearing blue T-shirts, or painting their nails and dyeing their hair. Families are changing their outside light bulbs to blue ones. Iconic landmarks around the world are lighting up their locations with blue lights.
