 A Life Transformed by Going Gluten Free, Casein Free and Chemical Free   My son threw things, screamed, had uncontrollable meltdowns, had severe sensory challenges, very poor social skills and never changed his diet from pretty much eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, waffles, pancakes, milk, cookies, chips, pretzels, ice cream, yogurt, and cheese. With summer here, swimming pools expose us to large concentrations of chlorine. Use NDF® or NDF Plus® to minimize chlorine in yourself and your child. A careful study published in an issue of Occupational and Environmental Medicine demonstrated chlorine used in swimming pools that sting your eyes and irritate your skin can also disrupt the sensitive tissue of your lungs. This is associated to the destruction of the cellular barriers that protect the deep lung (respiratory epithelium), making them "leaky" and more vulnerable to the passage of allergens.  Raise your hand if commercial non-dairy yogurt like So Delicious® and Amande have been a godsend. It sure has for this dairy-free, soy-free family!   When we travel, we hit the nearest Whole Foods or Natural Grocers to stock the hotel's mini-fridge with yogurt goodness. Unfortunately, as convenient as it is to buy, it gets a wee bit expensive and is loaded with too much sugar for everyday yogurt consumption. Just one 6-ounce container of a popular brand of plain non-dairy yogurt contains 12 grams of sugar (let's not even examine the label of the flavored varieties). And depending on where you shop (if you can find it at all) you fork over anywhere between $1.29 to $2.99 — for 6 ounces!  I am a digestion junkie. Most of my research and education focuses on how to improve digestive function and correct the many ways that our digestive processes can go awry. For children with special needs, we must focus on creating the most optimal digestive system possible.         Why am I so focused on digestion?    Digestion is how we obtain nutrients from our food. When even one step in the digestive process is compromised, nutrients are not correctly assimilated into the body, and other parts of our physiology such as our nervous and immune systems suffer. We are losing out on valuable building blocks that are especially needed by children with autism, aspergers, schizophrenia, ADD, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD states in her book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome" that she has "yet to meet a child with autism, ADHD/ADD, asthma, eczema, allergies, dyspraxia or dyslexia, who has not got digestive abnormalities. In many cases, they are severe enough for the parents to start talking about them first." She renames all of the above conditions "Gut And Psychology Syndrome," or "GAP Syndrome."  It’s important to have a healthy gut to keep the body functioning properly. When a person experiences problems with digestion, they may want to consider an organic detox to get their health back on track. A new study from Texas A&M University has found that one way to promote a healthy gut in children is to breastfeed them in infancy.   The study showed that breastfed babies tend to have healthier digestive systems than formula-fed infants.   "Our findings suggest that human milk promotes the beneficial crosstalk between the immune system and microbe population in the gut, and maintains intestinal stability,” said researcher Robert Chapkin.   The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for the first six months of life. According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are multiple benefits to breastfeeding, since breast milk contains many proteins, vitamins and healthy carbohydrates.   Among other beneficial substances is lactose, which may also promote a healthy gut. According to the organization, lactose helps to decrease unhealthy bacteria levels in the stomach, while working to improve the body’s ability to absorb calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Breastfeeding Promotes a Healthy Gut in Babies

 Hungry during pregnancy? Try a bowl of cereal. A new research study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that women who consumed at least 600 micrograms of folic acid daily had a 38 percent lower risk of having a child on the autism spectrum.   Folic acid, which is a synthetic form of the B vitamin folate, is an addition to many breakfast cereals and other foods containing grains. First added in 1998 in the United States, folic acid deficiencies in pregnant women was linked to brain and spine birth defects.   Folate is an important vitamin for early brain development, as it helps the brain establish those connections and basic functions. Folate deficiency might be linked to mental retardation and developmental disabilities because of its assistance with brain development in early life.   Some researchers hypothesize that too much folic acid during pregnancy actually increases the risk of autism. The researchers of this study investigated the folic acid intake of mothers of 429 preschoolers with autism and 278 neurotypical preschoolers. The findings show that mothers of children without autism had an increased intake of folic acid through fortified foods.    Of the mothers of children without autism, 69 percent of them received the recommended daily amount of 600 micrograms, and these mothers got an average of 779 micrograms of folic acid each day. These numbers compared to mothers of children with autism, who averaged 655 micrograms per day; only 54...

Many of us know milk products are perhaps the easiest and most well known way to get calcium, which is important for growing bones and teeth. However, there are alternate sources of calcium that will likely fit into your child's modified diet.     Why Do We Need Calcium?    Calcium helps growing bodies build strong bones, regulates the heart's rhythm, and helps send chemical messages through nerves. The body gets calcium in two ways; through foods you ingest or by taking it from the bones. Vitamin D is also necessary for the body to absorb calcium and strengthen bones. Muscle, nerve, and immune system function also relies on Vitamin D. The body produces Vitamin D naturally when exposed to sunlight. Foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, and tuna) are high in Vitamin D, and products like milk and other beverages are usually fortified with Vitamin D because they do not have much of it naturally.
