Family Activities Bring a Good Time. Spring has finally arrived…and that means it’s time for some adventures! I recall one of the big adventures for me as a 12 year old girl was going to the “Loop,” Downtown Chicago. My girlfriend and I, along with my 14 year old sister and her girlfriend, went downtown by ourselves. Now it was quite a trip, because we had to take two busses each way. It was about 25 miles from our house. And we’d spend the day window shopping and going to lunch at the Woolworth’s lunch counter. Other adventures took us bicycling to various parks or hiking in the forest preserves.   As a family, we’d often go to the museums during spring break. We went to the Field Museum, to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs, and of course, to the Museum of Science and Industry. Once I had my own children, no longer living in Chicago but in Northern California, we’d go to the state capital or to Sutter’s Fort, Indian Grinding Rock State Park, or to the railroad museum.  It really didn’t matter what the adventure was, the important thing was that we were spending the day together as a family. So any type of adventure would do!  The children’s verse “April Showers bring May flowers” sets the theme for this month’s fun ideas. For many families spring does bring unpredictable weather with some warm days and some cold days, rain and sometimes snow. When it is too cold to go outside kids can make a rainbow with spray bottles or bend water with a balloon. When the weather is warm outside they can set up a sprinkler obstacle course that will water the yard and provide a lot of fun.    Spray Bottle Rainbow     Items Needed     4 spray bottles — you can reuse bottles such as Windex   4 different colors of powdered paint   Large paper   Easel   Tablespoon     Fill each bottle ¾ of the way with warm water.   Add 1 tablespoon of powdered paint to each bottle.   Shake well until all of the paint is dissolved — add more paint as desired but make sure it all dissolves, or it will clog the spray bottle.   Hang a large piece of paper (flip chart paper works great) on the easel.   Allow each child to create a piece of art by spraying the colored water onto the paper.   Allow the paper to dry. 2013 Holiday Gift Guide

When audiences go to the theaters to see Disney’s new animated feature film Frozen, they will get an additional treat. A new short, Get a Horse, will run before the main film. Get a Horse is entirely new but looks like it was made decades ago. And, Walt Disney supplies the voice of Mickey Mouse, thanks to modern technology and the imaginations at Disney Animation. Lauren MacMullan, the director of Get a Horse, explained that she wanted the new short to reflect the 1928-1929 era of animation, which included “ridiculous plots and expressiveness” and were “inventive.” There were “no laws of physics and gravity.” That certainly sums up this little film.  MacMullan explained that the plot is akin to The Purple Rose of Cairo in that characters on screen are pulled into the real world. Mickey, Minnie, and the group are on the screen, and then they are magically pulled into today (via 3D), thanks to the wonderful creative team on this film. 3D makes the transformation between the two worlds as realistic as possible. This film needed some additional creativity to make it as impressive as it is, so there was a lot of collaboration between the 2D animators and the CG animators. As a matter of fact, MacMullan called this collaboration “unusual.” It’s something you have to see to understand.  Notting Hill, a modern-day fairy tale, is now available in high definition. Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant star in this story of a mild-mannered bookstore owner and an actress who happens to be the most famous woman in the world. One day William Thacker (Grant) accidentally meets Anna Scott (Roberts), a famous actress from America who is in London filming a movie. Thacker is not a suave man by any stretch of the imagination and bumbles his way through their meeting. A deep friendship then grows between the “commoner” and “the princess”, so to speak. As their relationship deepens and they fall in love, cracks begin to show as the differences in their individual lifestyles surface.  Anna is introduced to William’s friends and feels at home, yet when he is in her environment, he feels like a fish out of water. After all, she can have any man in the world and he is only a simple bookstore owner. How can he compete with her Hollywood relationships? When it ran in theaters, audiences made The Croods the biggest animated movie of the year bringing in 585 million dollars, and now this hit family is available for home viewing. The Croods is the first family film that features an entire family. At a gathering of domestic and international press presented by DreamWorks Animation Studios, filmmaker Chris Sanders explained they set the story in the “Croodacious Era” because there were “no boundaries” and they could make up interesting plants and animals but keep it believable. Setting the film in this fictional yet somewhat realistic (emphasis on “somewhat”) time period allowed the filmmakers the freedom to create a new world from scratch. The characters have memorable names. Most are monosyllable names keeping with their spirit. Who would have thought to name the guy “Guy”? But it works. Grug (the father), Eep (the curious teenage daughter), Gran (the grandmother), Thunk (the bumbling son), Ugga (the mother), and baby Sandy have become beloved characters for families around the world. They are a whole family who are dealing with typical situations families today confront, but they are doing it a very long time ago. It goes to show, families are families no matter when they exist.
