The video is now viral. Over 20,000 upvotes on Reddit's r/TikTokCringe, coverage from The Drum to Disability Scoop, and coalition support from the National Down Syndrome Society, Down's Syndrome Association UK, Canadian Down Syndrome Society, and five other international orgs. Noah's 91-second case for retiring the R-word doesn't lecture. It lists absurd things humanity used to do and doesn't anymore.   What the Video Says. Set at a dinner party, Noah's character walks someone through history: washing clothes with urine, putting animals on trial, heroin cough syrup, wearing meat masks, mouse hair eyebrows, husbands selling wives at market, dueling. His closing line: "Today we don't do these things anymore because we learned they're absurd, unhygienic or simply harmful to someone. Well, the r-word is harmful to us." It's not about being confrontational. It's about being clear. It's about knowing your rights and stating them calmly when someone suggests you don't have them. Here's how to build those skills in the situations where they matter most. Know What You're Entitled To. Self-advocacy starts with understanding your legal rights. You can't assert what you don't know you have. When the ABC sitcom Speechless premiers September 21, 2016, viewers will see a different kind of sitcom family. Minnie Driver plays Maya, the mother of three kids, one of which is a special needs child confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak. It has been over 25 years since a star in a TV show emphasized the life of a special needs child. Life Goes On (1989-1993) had Chris Burke as Corky, a young boy with Down syndrome. Speechless has Micah Fowler as JJ, a young boy with cerebral palsy. Driver's character does everything in her power to make sure her kids have a "normal" life and goes out of her way to create a positive environment for JJ, often to the extent of overdoing her attention to him and his needs and possibly giving less attention to her other two children. Speaking to the media at the recent Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, Driver explained, "You know, when I read this, it is a high degree of difficulty to pull this particular character off, because she's a lot. What a treat for this correspondent to be part of today's press conference. April 16th 2015 marks "100 Days" until the Special Olympics World Games kicks off this July. As everyone gathered to hear from former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, President of LA2015 Patrick Mc Clenahan, and Olympian Julie Foudy, the energy was absolutely electric at the LA84 facility. The global messengers were excited to present the press and the world with the new medals for this year's 2015 games. There will be 7,000 athletes from 177 countries participating in this global event.     Hearing cheers from the crowd as ambassador to this years games, Dustin Plunkett, introduced the former Mayor. Villaraigosa gave an inspiring speech asking that everyone participate by attending or volunteering, and he also asked the corporate Los Angeles to donate funds to the cause. He called Los Angeles, "The City of America's hope and promise" and expects that the games will be successful. The Taylor's Gift Foundation is all about giving the gift of life.  The Beginning with Taylor  Todd and Tara Storch started the Taylor's Gift Foundation in 2010 when their thirteen year-old daughter, Taylor, passed away from injuries received in a skiing accident on a family vacation in Colorado. In the midst of coping with their unfathomable grief, Todd and Tara decided to donate Taylor's organs. As a result, Taylor was able to save five lives through organ donation. In her memory, the parents organized the Taylor's Gift Foundation and made it their mission to re-gift life through providing a way for others to hear their story and to sign up to become an organ donor. Our family's story became a national discussion when, after years of unsuccessful advocating for support for our mentally and organically disabled daughter, we made a decision to send her to live with another family in another state where she would be able to get the support that eluded us. Many people assume that our story is just another adoption story and though I came to live it because we adopted, that is not at all what it is about. I am a huge proponent of adoption and I place blame on no one. Our story is our story. Our adoption, and only our adoption, was sadly built on a foundation of deceit. Perhaps for all the right reasons, our daughter's birthmother chose to hide her prenatal abuse to find the best family for her baby. Her mindset was, no doubt, that the right family could undo any of the harm she caused to the baby by her drug and alcohol abuse, no less her own psychological problems. Special Needs In Our Homes: A National Discussion That Must Continue

 News reports of abuse against individuals with disabilities have been exploding across the news. Stories of children being left on the bus, subjected to electroshock therapy, and even parents sending kids to school with a wire because of suspected abuse from teachers have all surfaced and are cause for concern regarding the disability care system.   Governor Andrew Cuomo says his priority for the next several weeks is to reform the system to better protect individuals with disabilities. With the end of the year's legislative session on June 21 approaching fast, the governor has very limited time to accomplish this goal.   Part of Cuomo's plan is to build a new agency that would investigate and record instances of abuse or neglect. This new plan would also make it easier to discharge those who engage in abuse or neglect of these individuals with disabilities.   200 New York State employees are under fire, and reports suggest these people will lose their jobs for "substantiated allegations of abuse." The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities employs thousands of people, but they have been trying to fire about 200 people, some of whose cases have dragged on for over a year.    Governor Cuomo believes he can get support from parents and disability advocates; he believes their rally will be enough to get lawmakers to respond quickly. For children and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders in West Los Angeles, Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services has a whole lot of answers to the the question, "What can we do?" As CEO Dr. Elias Lefferman says, "You do everything you can whenever you can." On November 3, 2011, Vista hosted the Third Annual Autism Conference for professionals and families. The theme was inspiration, exploring what people are engaging in as families, individuals and schools. This year in particular, the conference served to showcase Miracle Theatre, part of the Vista Inspire Program. Headed by Elaine Hall, a renowned autism educator and children's acting coach, Miracle Theatre is a place for children with all forms of autism to socialize and put on shows. "When you see a show, you're seeing a point in time," says Dr. Lefferman. "What you don't see is what led up to it." Children with autism and other special needs who participate in the Miracle Theatre program may have language skills and some may not, but with the help of volunteer mentors, all children find that there is a place for them in theatre. Dr. Lefferman tells the following story "so that with one anecdote you get a sense of what goes on here."
