Morton Elementary School in Franklin, Virginia on charges including abduction, assault and battery, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The arrests followed a February investigation into alleged physical abuse of non-verbal and autistic children in a special education classroom, captured on video surveillance. Jessie Blow and Tabatha Saunders were named in the initial police report. A third staff member faces the same charges. The alleged misconduct ranged from flicking a child's ear to improperly restraining a student in a Rifton chair, a positioning device designed for therapeutic use, not restraint. Separately, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights opened an investigation into alleged IEP implementation failures and retaliation at the same school. This case exposes how children in special education, especially non-verbal students, face elevated risks when staff aren't properly trained in disability rights and restraint protocols.   New York City is behind only Washington, D.C. for the worst record in the United States regarding integrating special needs students in mainstream classrooms. The city plans to align NYC with other school districts by including more special ed students in these classrooms.   Most of New York City's special ed students are currently in specialized classrooms or special schools, and a dismal average of five percent of those students graduate. Starting in September, mainstream schools will have to start integrating these students in classrooms, despite protests from teachers, parents, and advocates.   These protestors insist that the plans are being made too hastily, and they say the plan might do more harm than good. They feel too few school administrators are truly prepared to handle the needs of special ed students.   In response to these protests, the deputy chancellor for special education Laura Rodriguez says the Department of Education has spent time and money to train educators by holding workshops and hiring coaches.   A pilot program of 260 schools showed more students were mainstreamed into classrooms for at least part of the day, but it is still unclear if special ed students made academic progress because of the integration. Each year, the IDA answers 30,000-40,000 direct inquiries to their national office from individuals seeking more information on dyslexia. The IDA estimates that up to 20% of the population demonstrates signs of dyslexia and a recent study revealed that as many as 35% of entrepreneurs may be dyslexic. Parents are outraged at one elementary school's use of what have been termed as "scream rooms" on their children with special needs and behavioral problems. Teachers and staff at Farm Hill Elementary School in Middletown, CT, reportedly used the rooms, which are no more than 6-by-4-foot closets, to isolate students with special needs who were being disruptive in class. Janitorial staff at the school reported having to clean up blood and urine from the floors and concrete walls. One father says his 10-year-old daughter is fearful of the rooms. "She doesn't want to go to school. She's constantly in the nurse's office trying to get out of there," he tells FoxNews.com. Board of Education Chairman Gene Nocera says he learned last week about the rooms. "Closet is pretty much what it is," a mother of two students at the school says. She claims that her children often are subjected to "screaming" coming from the rooms. Nocera acknowledged to FoxNews.com that the reports he was hearing were "disturbing" and that school officials were looking into the use of the rooms. He stressed that school policy states that no child should be left alone at any time. Nocera presented a plan to parents at a Board of Education meeting earlier in the week, which included the school district hiring full-time psychologists and giving more special needs training to faculty members.   A Smile as Big as the Moon  is an inspiring story about a class of special education students who dream of going to Space Camp. What began as a memoir written by real-life special education teacher Mike Kersjes has now been made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie of the same title. Kersjes, played by John Corbett (Sex in the City, My Big Fat Greek Wedding), is also a main character in the film. He decides that participating in NASA's Space Camp would do wonders for his class's self esteem. The class itself is made up of young people with learning disabilities, Tourette's syndrome, emotional problems, and one boy with Down syndrome who dreams of becoming an astronaut. What seems an impossible feat–to bring a group of struggling students to a competitive education program designed for gifted science learners–is made possible with the help of a fellow teacher and nine months of rigorous teaching, training, and fundraising. Many of the characters in the class are played by young actors with disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. The story focuses on their ability to work together to overcome numerous obstacles that stand in the way of achieving their dream.
