The Webster's dictionary definition of the word reject is: 1 to refuse to accept, recognize, believe, etc. 2 To refuse to grant: deny, as a petition. 3 To refuse (a person) recognition, acceptance, etc. 4. To expel; react against physiologically. 5 To castaway as worthless; discard. A person or thing that has been rejected. When you have experienced rejection first-hand, there is no need for a dictionary definition, as you know exactly how it feels. Being on the receiving end of rejection can be the cruelest act you can experience and, in my case, it led to severe depression.  The beginning of my friendships were always filled with possibilities. I would dive into the relationship with much enthusiasm, always driven by the challenge of having this friend last longer than a few weeks. I was always eager to please full of energy and encouragement, going out of my way to be as helpful as I would. The honeymoon phase was always wonderful. Then the relationship seemed to slowly dwindle down; no return of phone calls, plans cancelled, until it became painfully clear that I was not wanted. But just more than half of these are taking medication for the condition. So for whatever reason, medication is not really the answer. Recent research has shown that ADHD and its subtypes can be identified from a person’s brainwaves, or EEG. Now, if a brainwave measure can highlight differences that allow us to predict medication response, perhaps the problem is one of “blighted circuitry” rather than of altered chemistry. We now believe that this is indeed the case. And if there is a circuitry problem that responds to a drug remedy, then it must be a software problem, not a hardware problem. Ever seen a family under the control of one of the children? It’s a troubling sight. Sometimes the role reversal is due to the inability of a parent to effectively discipline the child, while, at other times, a recalcitrant child has forcibly stripped the parents of authority. All children are oppositional to some degree, but when a child becomes so overtly hostile toward authority that the behavior interferes with normal social functioning, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) may be a reasonable suspicion. Children with this disorder tend to have frequent temper tantrums (meltdowns), argue excessively with anyone who dares challenge their misbehavior, respond to even the slightest insult with disproportionate anger and aggression, simmer with resentment, and are often driven to exact revenge for any perceived transgression. Children with oppositional defiant disorder will go out of their way to annoy others, and will blatantly and quite stubbornly disregard rules. Parents of children with ODD frequently report that the child was overly demanding and rigid from a very early age. What if a diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorderr seems to fit your child, but his symptoms are even worse than described. What if your child initiates physical fights, has been cruel to animals, has set fires, or destroyed property? A child who displays these behaviors may suffer from conduct disorder.
