The short answer: it depends on what you're trying to find, what your insurance will cover, and how much uncertainty you can live with while you wait for answers. What Each Test Detects. Chromosomal microarray (CMA) looks for chunks of DNA that are missing or duplicated. It catches deletions and duplications as small as 50,000 base pairs, which is enough to identify most chromosome disorders. CMA is the test that finds conditions like 22q11.2 deletion syndrome or Angelman syndrome when a child has autism, developmental delays, or unexplained intellectual disability. But "the right thing" isn't obvious when you're being asked to enroll your child in research you don't fully understand, for a drug that may or may not work, with risks you can't fully predict. You need a framework: not a sales pitch, not a fear campaign, but a structured way to evaluate whether this trial makes sense for your family. Here's how to think through that decision. What Phase Is the Trial, and What Does That Mean? Trials move through three phases before FDA approval. Each phase answers a different question.  Phase 1 tests safety in 20 to 100 people. Researchers are figuring out dosing, side effects, and whether the drug is tolerated. This is the highest-risk phase. The drug may not work at all; safety is the only question being answered. Families got very good at absorbing disappointment. They built a healthy skepticism into the way they read trial announcements. Which is exactly why Zatolmilast matters so much, and why I think it's worth looking at it carefully rather than cautiously. In 2024, Zatolmilast became the first drug to produce unequivocally positive results in a Phase 2 trial for Fragile X syndrome. Not marginal. Not statistically significant-but-clinically-questionable. Positive enough that the FDA greenlit Phase 3 trials, the final confirmatory step before an approval decision. At the same time, SPG601 received FDA Fast Track designation in December 2024, a status reserved for drugs addressing serious conditions where existing treatments fall short. Two credible candidates, further along than anything the field has seen in 15 years. That matters, and families who've been waiting deserve a clear account of what it means. A 2025 NIH study turned that assumption over. Children with cerebral palsy who had higher brain connectivity had worse motor function, not better. That is genuinely surprising research, and it has real implications for how families think about therapy, progress, and what they're trying to achieve. The Study and What It Found. Researchers used functional MRI to map brain connectivity in children with spastic CP, measuring how many neural pathways fired during motor tasks and comparing that to standardized assessments of each child's motor function.
