Karl Tabouret crossed the line in 27 minutes and 10.7 seconds on March 11, 2026, winning the men's 10km interval start standing at the Paralympics in Tesero, Italy. He beat the silver medalist by 27.7 seconds. He beat bronze by 48.6 seconds. His first Paralympic medal was gold.

Tabouret is 22. He's had cerebral palsy with spastic involvement of the lower limbs since birth. He grew up in Villard-sur-Doron, a village in the Beaufortain valley of the French Alps, skiing at the same club as Julia Simon and Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, both of whom went on to win Olympic medals in biathlon. His older sister was a cross-country skier at Les Saisies. That's how the family got into the sport.

He started para Nordic skiing at 8.

From Village Club to National Team

At 17, the French Handisport federation spotted him and brought him into their "Jeunes à Potentiel" program, the Young Talent track. The para team became what he calls his "second family."

That progression, village club to national scouting to international podium, is the path parents of kids with CP can visualize when they're sitting in early intervention meetings. It's not hypothetical. It happened in a French valley town to a kid who started skiing because his sister did.

By 2025, Tabouret was racing at World Championships. He won gold in the classic sprint and silver in the 10km classic. The classic sprint race was the first time para cross-country athletes competed in the same stadium, on the same day, as able-bodied skiers. He won that race.

Daviet's Advice: Trust Yourself

Tabouret has long struggled with self-doubt. He said in an interview before the Games, "I've always tended to doubt myself and panic quite easily."

His mentor is Benjamin Daviet, France's flagbearer at Beijing 2022 and the most decorated French winter Paralympian in history. What impresses Tabouret most about Daviet isn't the medal count. It's that he never gets stressed. "His shooting rhythm and his consistency are examples for me," Tabouret said. "One day, he advised me to trust myself more."

At the 2026 Games, Daviet won two bronze medals in the 20km and classic sprint. The veteran's career may be winding down. The protégé's is just beginning.

The Race

The 10km interval start standing was held on Day 5 of the Paralympics, the same session where Oksana Masters and Kendall Gretsch won gold for the United States. The snow was soft. Tabouret said afterward he thought he might fall at times.

He didn't.

"I went for this medal for myself and also for the team," he told reporters after the race. "I hadn't managed to win one a few days ago and that pushed me to give it my all today."

His family was there for the first time after missing World Cups and World Championships. He said the extra spectators gave him a boost to push to his maximum capacity. "I've been looking forward to the Games for four years now."

In an interview with Nordic Mag after the race, he said, "The demon in me woke up."

Tabouret's win wasn't a Cinderella story. It was the result of years of training, a national scouting system that found him, a veteran who told him to trust himself, and a family that showed up in Italy to watch him race.

He finished 30 seconds ahead. His first Paralympic medal was gold. The path from cerebral palsy diagnosis to Paralympic podium isn't theoretical. It's documented, and it started in a French village with an 8-year-old on skis.
