Actor and singer Nick Jonas spoke to CNN’s Soledad O’Brien recently about what it has been like for him to live with type 1 diabetes. The star of Broadway’s How to Success in Business without Really Trying was diagnosed with diabetes at age 14 and is very vocal about raising awareness.

“The thing about diabetes, type 1 . . . is that it’s unpredictable,” he says. “You can do your best to sort of manage it . . . but one day it could just decide it’s going to be more difficult than others.” He recounts moments when he was performing with the Jonas Brothers on stage and experienced a blood sugar high or low. “It’s a horrible feeling,” he tells CNN. “High blood sugar, you’re feeling thirsty, you have to use the restroom, and your attitude can be a bit shaken . . . When you’re low, you feel like you might pass out and you feel a bit sick. So both are a horrible feeling.”

Jonas says living with diabetes is really about dealing with it in the moment. When he received his diagnosis, he was at an age where he “had an understanding about it.” He credits his doctor and the people around him with helping him make the life adjustment.
