Alaska State School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Alaska State School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AKSDHH) offers comprehensive Pre-K through 12th grade education using a bilingual, bicultural instructional model that supports simultaneous development of American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Every student receives tailored placement and specialized services via an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Students may attend DHH self-contained classrooms where ASL is the primary communication mode for core academics or participate in general education classrooms with educational interpreters and specialists. On-site therapeutic and developmental services include audiology, ASL development, listening and spoken language instruction, speech and language therapy, and counseling focused on social-emotional learning and deaf identity.

Programs are integrated across Anchorage campuses: Russian Jack Elementary, Clark Middle School, and Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School. For older students, Transition Readiness classes and vocational coursework at King Tech High School focus on advocacy, career planning, and independent living. AKSDHH also supports families through sign language classes and streamlined processes for requesting interpreters for school-related activities.
