Small and Rural Schools Network

The Special Education Small and Rural Schools (SPED SRS) initiative, under the Texas Education Agency, is dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for students with disabilities within small and rural Texas school districts. The program specifically supports K-12 students in populations of 700 or fewer, focusing on addressing the unique needs of diverse learners, including those with language-based learning disabilities and twice-exceptional (2e) students.

To overcome challenges like geographic isolation and limited resources, SPED SRS utilizes innovative programs and therapeutic methodologies. The network leverages Shared Service Arrangements (SSAs) to pool resources across districts, providing students with access to a broader range of specialized services, developmental support, and therapeutic interventions that might otherwise be unavailable in smaller settings. The initiative emphasizes low student-teacher ratios to ensure personalized attention and effective IEP implementation.

A core pillar of the SPED SRS mission is fostering strong, collaborative partnerships with families to ensure parents are active participants in their child's educational journey.
