The Learning Center at The McGillis School

The Learning Center (TLC) at The McGillis School in Salt Lake City offers a specialized K-8 program for students with language-based learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Students attend highly structured grade-level homerooms for core academics, including reading, writing, spelling, math, and history. An exceptional 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio (typically 3 to 8 students per teacher) ensures intensive, individualized attention.

Instruction utilizes explicit, multisensory methodologies to build auditory, visual, and tactile learning pathways. Staff are highly trained in specialized practices such as Orton-Gillingham (including the Wilson Reading System), Lindamood-Bell processes, and Multisensory Math. Working with literacy specialists, teachers ensure mastery of small skill components before progression.

TLC students integrate into the broader McGillis community for science, art, music, PE, drama, and all-school events. The program emphasizes self-advocacy and independent learning strategies. Admission requires a recent psycho-educational evaluation (within two years) demonstrating average to superior cognitive ability. The program is not intended for students whose primary challenges are autism, traumatic brain injury, or emotional/behavioral issues.
