Boston Nature Center Day Camp

Isabella, MinnesotaDay Camp

Camp Buckskin is an overnight summer camp offering specialized services for boys and girls ages 6-18 who are experiencing academic and/or social skill difficulties. Many of the campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, or similar needs, while also having average to well above average intelligence. The camp aims to provide extra help and support to help campers convert their potentials into abilities. One of the key focus areas is helping campers become more self-aware, particularly in how their words and actions come across to others, addressing peer relation difficulties.

Since its inception in 1959, Camp Buckskin has helped over 8,000 children benefit from its therapeutic program, with reported personal growth and improvement by parents, teachers, and other professionals. The camp utilizes the summer to help youth stay focused, gain knowledge and skills, and improve existing abilities, leading to a smoother transition to the new school year and ultimately, increasing happiness and success.

The camp offers a combination of traditional camp activities and some academic activities each day. Campers progress through various levels in each activity, receiving recognition for their achievements. In addition, the camp focuses on a Personal Growth program where campers work on social skill goals throughout the day, improving peer relations, interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and related skills. These areas are addressed, evaluated, and recorded daily, with parents receiving a written report and insights to help their child continue the progress made at camp.

Overall, Camp Buckskin provides a supportive and enriching environment for campers with special needs, helping them develop essential skills, improve peer relations, and ultimately build a stronger self-concept. The camp's approach is consistent with that of parents and teachers, providing a comprehensive and effective program for children with unique needs. If you have a child with special needs, consider how Camp Buckskin can help them now and for many years to come.
