Camp Lakeside

Isabella, MinnesotaOvernight Camp

Camp Buckskin is an overnight summer camp located in Isabella, MN, that specializes in serving boys and girls ages 6-18 who are experiencing academic and/or social skill difficulties. The majority of the campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers or similar needs but have average to well above average intelligence. The camp has been in operation since 1959 and has served over 8,000 children who have experienced a great deal of personal growth and improvement as reported by their parents, teachers, and other involved professionals.

The program at Camp Buckskin effectively utilizes the summer to help youth not only stay focused but gain knowledge and skills while improving existing abilities. The campers receive instruction in a mix of traditional camp and some academic activities each day. As they acquire knowledge and demonstrate skills, they progress through the various levels in each activity, and are recognized for their achievements. Along with the traditional camp activities, Camp Buckskin also focuses on a Personal Growth program where campers work on social skill goals selected by their parents. These learning opportunities help improve peer relations, interpersonal communication skills, problem solving abilities, and a variety of related skills, which are addressed and evaluated each day and recorded for parents to receive after camp.

Parents appreciate the strengthened self-concept resulting from successes in the program and are interested in helping their child make progress in their peer relations, as making and maintaining friendships is crucial. The camp's approach is consistent with those of both the parents and teachers, aiming to supplement their efforts at home and school.

Through a mix of traditional camp activities and academic programs, Camp Buckskin provides a supportive and nurturing environment for children with special needs, offering them the tools and skills to thrive both socially and academically. The camp's focus on personal growth and the development of essential life skills makes it a valuable resource for families seeking to support their children with special needs.
