Camp Buckskin, located in Isabella, MN, is an overnight summer camp specifically designed to serve boys and girls ages 6-18 who are facing academic and/or social skill difficulties. The majority of campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, or similar needs. What sets Camp Buckskin apart is their focus on helping campers with average to well above average intelligence tap into their potential with the extra help and support they need.
Since its establishment in 1959, Camp Buckskin has helped over 8,000 children benefit from their therapeutic program, leading to personal growth and improvement as reported by parents, teachers, and professionals. The camp effectively utilizes the summer to help youth stay focused, gain knowledge and skills, and improve existing abilities, leading to a smoother transition to the new school year and improved happiness and success.
The program at Camp Buckskin works on two levels, with a mix of traditional camp and academic activities each day. Campers not only acquire knowledge and skills, but also work on personal growth goals selected by their parents. There is no specific, scheduled time to work on these areas, allowing for 'teachable moments' to occur at various times throughout the day. The camp records and evaluates the progress in these areas, providing a written report to parents after camp and sharing insights and observations to help continue the progress made at camp.
Camp Buckskin is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and offers a unique and supportive environment for children with special needs to thrive. Parents appreciate the strengthened self-concept resulting from successes in the program and the focus on improving peer relations and interpersonal communication skills, which are crucial for their child's development and long-term success.
For parents looking for a camp that focuses on personal growth and academic and social skill development, Camp Buckskin provides a valuable and supportive option for children facing challenges that need extra help and support.
