Camp Buckskin, located in Isabella, MN, is an overnight summer camp that specializes in serving boys and girls ages 6-18 who are experiencing academic and/or social skill difficulties. Specifically, the majority of campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, or similar needs. The campers have average to well above average intelligence and have a world of potential that has yet to be developed, requiring extra help and support to convert their potential into abilities.
Since 1959, Camp Buckskin has helped over 8,000 children benefit from their therapeutic program, experiencing personal growth and improvement as reported by their parents, teachers, and other professionals involved.
The camp's program effectively utilizes the summer to help youth stay focused, gain knowledge and skills, and improve existing abilities, leading to a smoother transition to the new school year and increased happiness and success. The camp supplements the efforts of the home and school and ensures that their approach is consistent with those of the parents and teachers.
The program works on two levels - traditional camp activities and academic activities, as well as a Personal Growth program. The campers receive instruction in a mix of traditional camp and academic activities each day, progressing through various levels and being recognized for their achievements. The less visible part features the Personal Growth program, where campers work on social skill goals, including improving peer relations, interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and more. These areas are addressed and evaluated daily, and the results are part of a written report that parents receive after camp.
Overall, Camp Buckskin offers a therapeutic program tailored to the needs of campers with academic and social skill difficulties, providing them with the support and opportunities to improve and succeed. Through their comprehensive approach, the camp ensures that campers develop essential skills and experience personal growth, benefiting them now and for many years to come.
