Camp Speers Eljabar YMCA

Isabella, MinnesotaDay Camp

Camp Buckskin is an overnight summer camp specifically designed to cater to boys and girls aged 6-18 who are facing academic and/or social skill challenges. Many of the campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, or similar needs, but they also have average to well above average intelligence. The camp's focus is to help these children develop their potential into abilities by providing them with the extra support and help they need.

Since its establishment in 1959, Camp Buckskin has helped over 8,000 children benefit from its therapeutic program, leading to significant personal growth and improvement. The camp effectively utilizes the summer to help youth stay focused, gain knowledge and skills, and improve existing abilities. By providing a consistent approach that complements the efforts of both the home and school, Camp Buckskin focuses on traditional camp activities alongside academic elements that help the campers progress and achieve recognition for their accomplishments.

One of the less visible but equally important aspects of the camp is the Personal Growth program, where parents select social skill goals for their child to work on. Campers have learning opportunities throughout the day to improve their peer relations, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities, which are then recorded and shared with parents in a written report after camp. This approach not only strengthens the campers' self-concept but also provides parents with insights to help their child continue the progress made at camp.

Camp Buckskin's focus on helping children overcome hurdles and make progress in their peer relations is a testament to their commitment to the campers' long-term success and happiness. The camp's approach to addressing academic and social challenges in a supportive environment makes it an ideal choice for parents looking to provide their children with the skills they need to thrive.

With its therapeutic program and focus on personal growth, Camp Buckskin is a valuable option for parents seeking to help their children with specific needs access the support and resources they need to succeed. Camp Buckskin's dedication to the development of its campers makes it a premier choice for families looking to provide their children with a supportive and enriching summer experience.
