Glacier View Ranch

Isabella, MinnesotaOvernight Camp

Camp Buckskin is an overnight summer camp that specializes in serving boys and girls ages 6-18 who are experiencing academic and/or social skill difficulties. The majority of campers have AD/HD, learning disabilities, Aspergers, or similar needs, while also having average to well above average intelligence. Camp Buckskin has been providing its therapeutic program since 1959, benefiting over 8,000 children. The camp effectively utilizes the summer to help youth stay focused, gain knowledge and skills, and improve existing abilities, leading to personal growth and improvement as reported by parents, teachers, and other professionals.

The program at Camp Buckskin works on two levels. Campers receive instruction in a mix of traditional camp and some academic activities each day, progressing through various levels in each activity and being recognized for their achievements. Additionally, there is a Personal Growth program in place, where campers work on social skill goals selected by their parents. These learning opportunities help campers improve their peer relations, interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a variety of related skills, which are addressed, evaluated, and recorded daily. The camp provides a written report to parents after the session and shares insights and observations to help parents continue the progress made at camp. This comprehensive approach helps improve the campers' self-concept and peer relations, making and maintaining friendships, which is crucial for their overall well-being.

The staff at Camp Buckskin understands the importance of consistent support from both home and school, making sure that their approach is aligned with that of the parents and teachers. The camp's aim is to help children not only in the short term but also to set them up for success in the long run. With a focus on personal growth, skill development, and social integration, Camp Buckskin offers a unique and effective program for children with special needs, ensuring that they have the necessary support and guidance to thrive.
