Camp Buckskin is an overnight summer camp located in Isabella, MN, that is dedicated to serving boys and girls ages 6-18 who are facing academic and/or social skill difficulties. The majority of the campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers or similar needs, and have average to well above average intelligence. The camp focuses on tapping into the potential of these campers and providing the extra help and support they need to convert their potential into abilities.
Since its establishment in 1959, Camp Buckskin has provided its therapeutic program to over 8,000 children who have experienced significant personal growth and improvement, as reported by their parents, teachers, and other professionals involved in their lives. The camp's program effectively utilizes the summer to help campers stay focused, gain knowledge and skills, and improve existing abilities, ultimately leading to a smoother transition to the new school year and increased happiness and success.
One notable aspect of the camp's program is the Personal Growth program, where parents select several social skill goals for their child to work on. Campers have the opportunity to work on these areas throughout the day, improving their peer relations, interpersonal communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and other related skills. Daily evaluations and written reports are provided to parents, along with insights and observations to help their child continue the progress made at camp.
Camp Buckskin's approach is consistent with that of parents and teachers, and the campers receive instruction in a mix of traditional camp and academic activities each day. The campers' achievements are recognized as they progress through the various levels in each activity, contributing to their personal growth and development.
The camp's commitment to helping children with special needs improve their social and academic skills makes it an ideal place for children to thrive and develop lasting abilities. With its focus on creating a supportive and nurturing environment, Camp Buckskin stands as a beacon of hope for parents and children facing academic and social challenges.
