Allergies cause physical problems, and they can be a significant piece of learning problems and emotional issues. At least 40% of the children I see have allergies as well as dyslexia or other learning and behavior problems.  Having allergies often complicates dyslexia treatment, because it's hard to tell which emotional or physical symptoms stem from the allergy and which are part of the dyslexia or another learning or behavior problem. You may be surprised to know that yelling, screaming, crying, and pouting can be allergic reactions. The list of physical and emotional symptoms of allergies below may surprise you, but I see them every day. Contact your family doctor, naturopath, or chiropractor if you notice any of these symptoms in your child.  Physical symptoms experienced by allergic patients:  Severe energy fluctuations in varying degrees, extreme fatigue, excessive sleepiness, or insomnia, unusual restlessness, general body ache. Pain of any kind, especially anything described as shooting, dull, pinprick sensation, or tightness in the chest. Abdominal symptoms such as bloating, hiccups, or bowel problems such as constipation or diarrhea.  The word dyslexia was coined in 1895 but didn't come into common usage until the 1960s. The word comes from the Greek roots dys, meaning "abnormal" or "difficult," and lexis, meaning "word" or "speech." At its most basic level, dyslexia literally translates to "difficulty with words."   Dyslexia is usually considered a reading and / or language-processing problem, and at one time in history, it was a synonym for word blindness or the inability to recognize words. Dyslexia is the most common of the conditions named under the broad category of "learning disabilities" or "learning differences," and involves neurological and structural issues related to brain and body development.    Other factors — such as allergies, nutrition issues, or heavy metal toxicity — must be addressed because they play a critical role in the ability of your child to learn and act appropriately. These complicating factors can cause mood swings, aggression, lack of focus and attention, and imbalances in brain chemistry.   According to the National Institute of Health, dyslexia is "one of several distinct learning disabilities. What Exactly IS Dyslexia?

 The National Institute of Health reports that up to 15 percent of the U.S. population might have dyslexia. As one of the most common learning disabilities, dyslexia has been the subject of much research.   A study published April 2012 in the Current Biology journal suggests that signs of dyslexia are present even before a child begins to read. Dyslexia is a reading disorder that is characterized by the brain having difficulty recognizing and processing certain symbols, such as letters.    While learning disorders such as dyslexia have been thought to be a spoken language problem, this research suggests visual attention is an important component to dyslexia.   In this research study, 96 Italian children in grades Kindergarten through second grade were followed — results show that the children who had difficulty identifying symbols and patterns had more trouble reading later on. The ability to recognize patterns in these symbols and their sounds then impacts speech.   The researchers suggest that including treatments regarding this visual information should be a part of dyslexia therapy. Critics of the study point out that research was completed in Italy, and the relationships between sounds and spelling is more difficult in English than Italian; therefore, the results might not translate as well to English-speaking children. One out of every three children entering first-grade lacks the basic skills for success in school. The National Center for Educational Statistics shows that as many as 20% of our nation's children have substantial difficulties learning to read, and in California 57% of fourth-graders cannot read at a basic level. The problem may be dyslexia.  Early diagnosis and intervention are critical for minimizing the impact of dyslexia. Parents with histories of reading/language difficulties should take note of their children's early development. Documenting milestones can be a useful tool for determining if intervention is needed.
