It is 5:40 on a Tuesday and the kitchen is doing four things at once. The overhead light is too bright, something on the stove is one minute from burning, one child is narrating a video game at full volume, and the other wants a snack that is not in the house. You know exactly what needs to happen next. What you no longer have is the capacity to do it while the noise keeps landing on you. Parents with Asperger syndrome tend to reach that moment earlier in the day than other parents do, and to describe it in different terms when they get there. The shortfall is almost never love or attention or willingness. Caregiving is assembled out of the exact materials that cost you the most: unpredictable noise, physical contact you did not initiate, interruption every ninety seconds, and social performance in front of other adults who are quietly evaluating how you do it. If your nervous system registers a sudden shriek the way it registers a fire alarm, you are spending real energy on input that other people filter out before it ever reaches them. Parenting When You Have Asperger Syndrome

A Minnesota law that took effect on August 1 lets the head of any state agency stop paying a provider or an individual caregiver based on a fraud allegation the agency has not proven, for as long as the investigation lasts. The law is 2026 Chapter 122, House File 3629, signed by the governor on May 26. It rewrites Minnesota Statutes section 15.013, which until Friday capped these freezes at 60 days and gave the target a right to appeal. What the Law Changed. The old version required a preponderance of the evidence that the participant "has committed fraud," notice 24 hours before the first missed payment, a stated end date, and the right to file a contested case under chapter 14 or petition a court for relief. All of that is gone. Under the new subdivisions, an agency head may withhold payments if the participant "is the subject of a credible allegation of fraud under investigation," and a credible allegation means one the agency head has verified "from any source," including tips, audit patterns, and court filings. Notice now goes out within five days after the money has already stopped, and it "need not disclose specific information concerning an ongoing investigation." There is no end date, because the withholding continues until the agency decides the evidence is insufficient or the legal proceedings finish. The appeal is gone too. You submitted the charge, received a charge number, and heard nothing for six weeks. No call from an investigator. No letter telling you where your file sits. The EEOC process runs mostly out of your sight, which makes its quietest stretch the part people misread most badly. A mind given no information will fill the gap with the worst available explanation, and the usual one is some version of "they threw it out." Almost never is that what happened. Your charge is moving through a sequence with real steps and real deadlines, and knowing the sequence changes what the silence means. The First Ten Days. Within 10 days of your filing date, the EEOC sends notice of the charge to your employer. That notice tells them a charge exists, who filed it, and what it alleges. The fact of the filing is not confidential, which surprises people who assumed they had a window of anonymity before anyone at work found out. If you are still employed there, this is the moment your working situation changes. Planning for that belongs before the filing rather than after it. What Happens After You File an EEOC Complaint

The report card says handwriting needs work. The teacher mentions that your child falls behind whenever the class copies from the board. At home, a pair of scissors produces something that only loosely resembles the line on the page. So you book an eye exam, because vision seems like the place to start, and the results come back 20/20. Nothing about that result is wrong. It answers a different question than the one you asked. Visual acuity describes how sharply the eyes take in detail. Visual motor integration describes what the brain and hands do with that detail once it arrives. A child can have flawless eyesight and still be unable to get a pencil to reproduce what those eyes are seeing. The Three Parts of Visual Motor Integration. Occupational therapists break the skill into three pieces that have to work together.  Visual perception is interpretation. The eyes send an image, and the brain decides that the shape is a triangle, that this line runs longer than that one, that the letter b faces one direction while d faces the other. You went into the follow-up appointment expecting a routine check-in, and you came out with a different word attached to your child. Maybe the developmental delay is now autism. Maybe the autism diagnosis has been revised to a language disorder with anxiety. Maybe the geneticist found something that reorganizes the whole picture. Your child walked in and out of that building exactly the same person, and yet the paperwork that governs their week just changed. The paperwork matters more than anyone tells you at the appointment. School eligibility, therapy authorizations, waiver waitlists, and respite hours are all attached to codes and categories, and those codes came from the old diagnosis. A reclassification can move services without anyone intending it to. It can also open doors that were closed last year. The difference between those two outcomes is usually how fast the parent gets in front of it. What the New Label Does and Doesn't Change. Your child's abilities on Tuesday are identical to their abilities on Monday. The reclassification is a change in how professionals describe what they already observed, not a change in what your child can do. What does change is the administrative machinery. When Your Child's Diagnosis Changes: What Happens to Services and Therapies

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration announced $73.2 million in mental health grant awards on July 31, split across three programs that point in noticeably different directions. Most of it, $44.3 million, goes to the Children's Mental Health Initiative, which pays for community mental health services for children and young adults from birth through age 21. Another $17.6 million funds suicide prevention work inside health systems, and $11.2 million goes to assisted outpatient treatment, a court-ordered form of care for adults with serious mental illness. What the Children's Money Buys. The initiative's 2026 notice of funding opportunity is far more specific than the press release. SAMHSA estimated 22 awards from a pool of $43.4 million, with states eligible for up to $3 million a year and counties, cities, and tribal organizations up to $1 million a year. Project periods run up to four years, and grantees have to put up matching funds. The program serves children with what the notice calls serious emotional disturbance, defined there as a serious emotional, behavioral, or mental disorder. The report arrives as a PDF attachment, twenty-some pages, and you open it on your phone in a parking lot because you have been waiting nine weeks for it. Page four has a table. The table has numbers like 87 and 9 and 68, and none of them are on the same scale, and the eligibility meeting is in ten days. Psychoeducational reports are written by evaluators for other evaluators. The school psychologist who ran the evaluation assumed the reader already knows that a 9 and a 95 can describe the same average performance. You are the one person at that meeting who knows your child, and you are being handed the document in the language you know least. Learning to read four or five conventions closes most of that gap. The Three Number Systems in One Report. Almost every psychoeducational report mixes three scoring scales without announcing the switch.  Standard scores have an average of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Most composite and index scores use this scale: cognitive indexes, achievement scores, adaptive behavior domains. Scores from 85 to 115 fall within one standard deviation of average, which covers roughly two-thirds of all children. A 100 is the exact middle. An 82 is below average but not dramatically so. Something automated probably is reading your application before a human does, and a tool that speaks the same language can help. What these tools cannot do is understand why your history looks the way it does. They touch four things at once: which services a relative can be paid for, how many hours, what a live-in caregiver's rate is, and who your case manager works for. None of this is the bigger overhaul the state calls Waiver Reset. Indiana's own fact sheets describe these amendments as preparation for that redesign, which arrives later and will rebuild the waiver structure itself. The Payment List Got Shorter. The clearest change is a closed list. The written permit test is the part most families brace for, and it is usually the part that goes fine. Rules of the road are a closed set of facts with unambiguous answers, and a teenager with Asperger syndrome has often read the manual twice before anyone suggested it. The trouble arrives on the third or fourth time behind the wheel: merging onto a highway while a truck brakes ahead, the wipers running, and a passenger asking a question that has nothing to do with driving. Driving is not a single skill. It is four or five skills running at the same time under time pressure, with no option to stop and process. For most new drivers those skills fuse into something automatic within a few months of regular practice. That fusing takes longer for many drivers with Asperger syndrome, and knowing which pieces lag is the difference between practice that builds a driver and practice that just accumulates hours in a logbook. Driving with Asperger Syndrome: The Skills That Take Longer to Build

Your child has been practicing letters at the kitchen table four nights a week. The grip still collapses halfway down the page, the pencil still slides toward the tip, and the two of you end up negotiating over the last three lines. Handwriting, cutting, buttoning, and zipping all sit on top of hand strength, finger control, and coordination that develop separately from the tasks themselves. When those foundations are thin, repeating the task mostly repeats the failure. Occupational therapists build the foundations first, which is why an OT session often looks like play with putty and clothespins rather than anything resembling a worksheet. Five things contribute to what most people call fine motor skill: hand strength, in-hand manipulation, bilateral coordination, stability at the shoulder and wrist, and precision grasp. Knowing which one is thin for your child matters more than the length of any activity list. Hand Strength: Endurance Before Precision. A child can have a textbook tripod grasp and still fail at handwriting, because the small muscles on the thumb side of the hand run out of endurance after a few lines.
