What Are Disability Rights Laws?

Disability rights laws protect people with disabilities. They make sure people with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else.

These laws say people with disabilities should be treated fairly. They should have the same chances to do things like get a job, go to school, or use public places.

The main disability rights law in the United States is called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It became a law in 1990.

What Does the ADA Do?

Who Is Protected by the ADA?

• Has a record of such an impairment
• Is regarded as having such an impairment

Major life activities include things like walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, and more. So the ADA protects people with many different kinds of disabilities.

Other Important Disability Rights Laws

While the ADA is the main disability rights law, there are some other important laws too:

• The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs run by federal agencies, in programs that get federal money, in federal employment, and in federal contractor employment.
• The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) makes sure students with disabilities get a free appropriate public education to meet their needs.
• The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing based on disability.
• The Air Carrier Access Act prohibits discrimination by airlines against passengers with disabilities.

Why Are These Laws Important?

Before these laws, people with disabilities often faced unfair treatment and barriers to participating in society. They were excluded from many opportunities.

These laws help ensure people with disabilities have equal rights and opportunities. They help break down barriers and fight against discrimination.
